In the cabinet business for 30 years, Osterwald & Sons was founded by Edzard Osterwald and is now run by his sons – two brothers with complementary skillsets in design and manufacture. The family has designed and built cabinets for homes locally and as far afield as Italy, Germany and France.
We asked for a couple of tips when it comes to the ideal home for the entertainer.
Any signature design elements that you would recommend for the keen entertainer?
We are best entertained by a host who is relaxed and happy, so practicality is essential; open surfaces and uncluttered spaces are key to hosting happiness.
What are the most important things to consider when building an entertainer’s home?
Right from the start you should design the home with furniture and cabinetry in mind. A lot of space and money will be saved this way.
- Think beyond trends.
- Avoid shortcuts for the sake of cost – rather wait until you can afford the right thing.
- Trust what you like and can live with every day.
What is Osterwald & Sons’ particular signature style?
No one style defines us. We have inherited and expanded fine design skills and traditional German craftsmanship. One could say these elements form our signature.
Your favourite project?
The best was working in a sensational apartment in Florence, Italy, which was originally built by Lorenzo de Medici right by the river. The appreciation for what we built in the very heart of the Western artisan-world was truly rewarding.
