Southern Guild opens its new Cape Town gallery with an inaugural show celebrating the continent’s foremost designers.
The design gallery, which represents collectible, limited-edition work from the continent, opens its new flagship venue, Guild, at the V&A Waterfront Silo District in Cape Town this month. Its inaugural exhibition features work by 23 South African heavyweights, such as Andile Dyalvane, Dokter and Misses, Gregor Jenkin and Porky Hefer (who the gallery represented at the inaugural London Design Biennale last year), alongside work by Cheick Diallo from Mali and Hamed Ouattara from Burkina Faso.
The group show’s title, Stellar, recognises excellence and relates to Southern Guild’s own identity, originally inspired by the Southern Cross constellation. “Stellar represents the highest echelon of collectible design from this country – something we have been building since we founded Southern Guild,” explains Trevyn McGowan who co-founded the gallery in 2008 with husband and business partner Julian McGowan. “It’s a very important show for us and our designers – a culmination of the work we’ve been doing for nearly a decade with the leading design voices in the country.”
Visit Stellar from 14 June until October 2017 at the new Southern Guild Gallery located in The Guild Group’s concept store, studio and gallery, Guild: 5B, Silo 5, V&A Waterfront. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm and Saturday 10am – 2pm.
