A two-bedroom duplex apartment in Bedfordview, Joburg, was recently renovated by Thomas Wilton Interior Design into a light-filled living space.
The brief was to completely revamp the existing unit, creating an open-plan space that still felt intimate and cosy. Being able to see throughout the flat was an important aspect of the design, while simultaneously creating demarcated functional areas.
“The design team decided to create a sophisticated industrial design with a homely feel,” says Thomas. The kitchen became the centre core of the home. Screens, finishes and different floor levels were utilised to create the different areas.”
The home is filled with locally designed furniture and artworks, the latter sourced from Joburg’s Daville Baillie Gallery. An eclectic mix of decor sees modern fittings and finishes used throughout the kitchen, including lighting, flooring and surfaces, mixed with the living room’s wooden parquet flooring, rich velvet-like sofas and a variety of rugs.
“Being able to transform a late seventies apartment into something fitting of today’s lifestyle was most rewarding,” says Thomas.
