Amsterdam creative studio Fiction Factory have spent four years researching and developing the technology to build a mould for the clever modular Wikkelhouse.
One of the amazing things about this small sustainable home is that it is made from cardboard, 24 layers of cardboard in fact, wrapped around a mould that’s shaped like a house. It’s then waterproofed and covered in wood. “Wikkelhouse is what you get when an everyday material finds a groundbreaking purpose,” explains the team behind the design.
Not only is it three times more sustainable than traditional homes and 100% recyclable, it’s also built to last at least 100 years. Better still, it doesn’t need a foundation, as it only weighs 6 000 kg. The Wikkelhouse is custom-built to your specifications and you can buy as many 1.2 m segments as you would like, to create a space suitable to your needs.
The idea behind Wikkelhouse is that you can place it wherever you want to – in the garden, on the roof, on your plot by the beach. It’s as the company says, a house for you.
We just wish they’d come to South Africa – and quick!
