Cool Spaces: ARRCC and SAOTA’s Canteen

Architecture firm SAOTA and interior design studio ARRCC have collaborated on their new canteen in their Cape Town office. 

With 180º views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill, city scrapers and the harbour in the distance, the brief was to design a flexible, multipurpose space primarily for staff to eat in, as well as an area for creative thinking, jam sessions, employee relationship building and a change of scenery for imaginative reflection for staff.

The initial architecture didn’t allow for simple additions and alterations, so it took some considerate, skillful planning. The brief was achieved through practical measures – movable tables, soundproof acoustic panelling, and adaptable work surfaces to accommodate anything from food prep to designing. A media wall, big screen, fireplace and ample storage facilitates sociable, relaxed interaction.
