5 Minutes With Skinny laMinx

A quick Q&A with Heather Moore, founder of local favourite Skinny laMinx and one of this year’s DARLINGS of local design at the upcoming Design Joburg.

What have you become known for and what defines what you do?

Skinny laMinx has become well known for our simple, striking textile prints, as well as the unusual yet harmonious ’50s-inspired colour palette we use.

What will you be unveiling at Design Joburg’s Darlings feature?

The ongoing drought in the Western Cape has me increasingly interested in the world of “dry” plants, and has seen our studio roof garden flourish. I’ve translated this new obsession into a three-colour textile print called Roof Garden.

Is there a design movement or style that informs your creations?

There’s something about the clean lines and dirty colours of the ’50s Modernist designers that makes my heart beat a little faster.

What are your thoughts on South African design right now?
One of my favourite things about being part of the SA design world is meeting fellow designers, talking about what we’re all working on and hatching plans to work together. That’s why I’m so thrilled by this Design Joburg concept. It’s all about forging connections in the pursuit of strengthening our local design community, and it’s going to be awesome!
