World Architecture Festival Winners 2023: Completed Buildings

COMPILED BY Gina Dionisio

The winners of the 2023 World Architecture Festival (WAF) have been announced and the list includes an honourable mention for an outstanding South African project in the Completed Buildings category.

This year, the prestigious World Building of the Year award went to Huizhen High School by Approach Design Studio/Zhejiang University of Technology Engineering Design Group in China. Located in Jiangbei District, Ningbo City, Huizhen is a bold exploration of ‘efficiency-first’ campus design where time can be ‘wasted’ seriously. The boarding school campus is a ‘floating forest’ with classrooms hung in each corner of the forest and joined by meandering paths.

Locally, the Lapalala Wilderness School by Local Studio were highly commended with an honourable mention in the School category.
