Tasked with replacing the roof of Vrede & Lust’s wedding venue, the team from the JNA Group wanted to create a new roof structure that would amplify the venue’s aesthetic appeal while honouring its past.

Introducing modern elements into the existing architectural language required a careful balance. The design incorporates curved lines that provide a fresh, contemporary feel while mimicking the appearance of traditional thatch roofing. Additionally, the roof sheeting was custom-painted to match the adjacent thatch roofs, ensuring visual cohesion. The use of tapered timber columns and exposed timber craftsmanship further reinforces the connection between old and new, creating an organic transition. This combination of materials and detailing allows the structure to feel both timeless and forward-thinking.

Construction didn’t come without its fair share of challenges. One of the key complexities was incorporating curved roof elements and intricate timber craftsmanship details into the design. To address these challenges, JNA Group’s roofing and timber divisions collaborated closely with Malherbe & Rust for the aesthetic design and Grobler & Genote for structural engineering. Further complications came in the form of the ever-unpredictable Boland winter, coupled with the urgency of an already scheduled wedding. Precision planning was paramount, with every phase aligning seamlessly to meet the looming deadline.

Sustainability also played a defining role in the project. Timber was the ideal material choice – beyond its low environmental impact, it offers excellent durability and natural acoustic properties, making it the perfect solution for the structure. Its warmth and texture seamlessly blend with the surrounding vineyards and landscapes of Vrede & Lust, creating a space that feels deeply connected to its environment.

From an aesthetic perspective, timber was essential in maintaining the heritage character of the venue. The versatile material allowed for intricate detailing and seamless integration with both traditional and modern design elements, enhancing the overall visual harmony of the space. jnagroup.co.za | vnl.co.za
