
Southern Guild, one of South Africa’s most important platforms for collectible contemporary design will be opening a new exhibition a little later this year, titled A New Wave.
The exhibition, which will be held at the Southern Guild Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town, will seek to show “never-before-seen collectible design from the country’s best young designers”.
The founders of Southern Guild and curators of the exhibition, Trevyn and Julian McGowan, have put out a call for design submissions from across the country. The gallery, which exhibits work from furniture and ceramics to lighting and sculpture, also plays a significant role in getting South African work onto the international design circuit, which means work selected for the exhibition has potential to travel.
Are you interested? Are you part of the new wave of design? Could you be the next big thing in South African design? Here’s how you can enter:
- Submit a maximum of five images of the one-off or limited-edition piece, with dimensions and description of materials and inspiration (1MB each will suffice). Should your piece not be complete, send comprehensive plans, renders and drawings of the proposed product, with dimensions and description of materials and inspiration.
- Submit a bio of 150 words about the designer.
- Send your details: full name, contact number(s), email address, birthday and location.
Requirements:
- The piece should be a new, functional product, in line with the requirements for collectible design. No funding is available for production.
- Work should not have been previously exhibited.
- Designers should be under 40 years of age and be based in South Africa or neighbouring countries.
- Send submissions by 9 May 2016 to Kerri at kerri@southernguild.co.za with “A New Wave Submission” and your name in the subject line. Successful applicants will be informed by 13th May and will have 8 weeks to complete their piece.
