African Jacquard is a heart-filled local brand to be proud of, and their spectacular textiles are perfect to collect and cherish.

The African Jacquard story started just under a decade ago, in 2014, when founder Christine Daron was inspired to create textile keepsakes for visitors to South Africa. Her initial idea was rather simple: to produce tea towels with cityscapes, nature scenes and wildlife woven into them.

Adamant that they needed to be created from jacquard fabric, Christine discovered a mill in South Africa that had a few non-operational jacquard looms standing about, and set out to revive them before beginning production. From there, things grew steadily, and the range now includes throws, cushions, towels, table linen and other accessories, all created locally and inspired by travels around the African continent.

“I am proud of our consistent growth year on year,” says African Jacquard MD Donna Allin. “Apart from our local support and outlets, we have crossed international waters, and are now supplying our textiles to retailers and luxury hospitality groups around the world.”

The brand has been in operation since 2014, opening its first physical store in 2021 at the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed market. This was quickly followed by another store opening in Stellenbosch in 2022. “We’re so thrilled to now be opening our flagship store in the heart of Cape Town, in the former Chandler House shop, which many locals and foreigners know well,” says Donna. “The new shop will offer a unique experience, where customers can get a feel for African Jacquard textiles in every room of a house. It’s a really immersive way of showcasing our products.”

The brand’s all-female team, who design, weave and manufacture the products in Cape Town, are passionate about textiles. “It’s this passion that led us to host The Textile Experience earlier this year,” says Christine. “It was an exclusive event that allowed guests to learn more about the rich heritage of our textiles, as well as offering a space to connect and collaborate with professionals in the design and hospitality industry. We plan to host it every year going forward.”

This is a brand that puts store by the fact that the quality, functionality and longevity of their textiles truly set them apart. These qualities certainly contribute to the many recurring customers, and are the reason why luxury hospitality groups clamber for their products. African Jacquard’s new store in Church Street will be an ode to this devotion to textiles and love for the brand.
