OPA’s Casa Brutale

WORDS Michaela Stehr

The team at Open Platform Architecture is building a brutalist-style home into the face of a mountain near Beirut.

The plans were originally released in July 2015, but the proposal had no existing site, client or budget. Now, the project – entitled Casa Brutale – has a backer with land on the Faqra mountains and a budget of $2.5 million to see it to completion.

“Casa Brutale redefines the harmonious coexistence of human and nature in a poetic homage to pure Brutalism,” explains the team on their website.

The structure is made up of three thick perforated concrete slabs and a giant glazed window as the fourth “wall” to soak in the breathtaking views surrounding the home. The roof will be made up of a glass-bottomed pool that will filter light into the main living space. “An inner staircase consists of thin, steel steps that allow the optical continuity from the kitchen to the glass façade,” adds OPA. “The staircase leads you to the mezzanine floor, where the master bedroom is exposed to the same overpowering vision of the Aegean.”
