Impilo Engcono results from a three day workshop undertaken by Zwelethu Mthethwa at the Africa Centre in rural KwaZulu Natal in June 2012. During this workshop, Mthethwa worked closely with 10 talented youths from the Mtubatuba area, training them in the art of photography with the intent of empowering them through the nurturing of a sustainable skill set. The opening evening will be on from 6pm to 9pm, and the exhibition will run until 1 May 2013.

This is a one-of-a-kind art event that’ll be going down on the last Thursday of each month. It’s a communal sketching evening! The sketching will happen all night but later in the eve, art and alternative movies will be screened. At 9pm, sketch battles will get started and one Doodle Bug (chosen by the audience) will walk away with a prize. Entrance is R30.

Pop artist Alex Hamilton has focused his attention on painting top South African icons to portray the exciting and diverse characters of South African history and pop culture in all its fascinating complexity. Inspired by street-art graffiti and classical pop art, each hand-cut stencil is spray painted onto a painted wooden block. The exhibition will run from 29 March to 6 April.
