Illustrator and designer Euodia Roets of Touchee Feelee is bringing a touch of art to such humble items as the placemat, serviette and eye masks, not to mention free downloadable Father’s Day cards. Here’s our fresh talent profile with the Limpopo-born Capetonian.
What was the first thing you designed?
A bow for my Alice-band.
What do you do now?
I design homeware and pamper products that I would want to receive as gifts. My love for illustration and art comes through strongly in my work.
How did that happen?
I wanted to showcase my illustrations on physical objects that people could touch and interact with – hence the name Touchee Feelee. The watercolor illustrations printed on the eye therapy pads where my first illustrations showcased on a 3D object.
What are some of your biggest accomplishments as a designer?
My biggest accomplishment is touching people on four continents with work I’ve created without having an office and a boss.
How did that come about?
Passion for illustration; and hate for having to be at the same place every day at the same time!
What is you design philosophy?
The conversation between your mind and hand when creating something is very important. When that creation starts on a computer screen, the conversation is lost.
In your view, does South Africa have a unique design language?
Not really. Most of my favorite designers in South Africa are (heavily) influenced by international design. I think people try to be more inspired by Africa, but so does everyone else in the world.
Advice for aspiring designers?
Be problem solvers!
How awesome are you really?
“It’s a big world out there, filled with desperate people who would gladly swim across an ocean of thumbtacks just to be eclipsed by the long shadow cast by my accomplishments.” – Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Okay, not that awesome.
