How to Create the Illusion of Space in a Small Room

Luxury interior designer, renovator and decor specialist, Tammy Holmes, shares her top tips on creating the illusion of space in a small room.

“When you find yourself in a small space, you can add elements to the environment that can give the illusion that it’s much bigger than it really is.” says Tammy. Here are her top five tips:

Mirror, mirror on the wall

By adding floor-to-ceiling Mirrors creates the illusion of space.

Don’t be afraid of colour

Use feature wall colours to demarcate a space within open plan living areas. For example: If the dining room and lounge flow into one space, use a different colour on the walls of the dining room to separate it and its mood from the TV room.

Size matters

It’s very important to use the correct size furniture, decor and wall art pieces in small spaces so that the room looks neither too cluttered or empty.

Keep it light

Lighter coloured furniture and clever lighting will create space.

Less is definitely more

Lastly, adopt a less is more approach, opting for “quality over quantity”. Rather spend your money on good pieces that accentuate the space, and can be used in future homes than buying lots of cheaper items that bring down the style and luxury of the environment.
