WORDS Jo Buitendach
The 1970s are back, inspiring interiors once again – and nowhere is this more evident than in the latest tile trends.
Whether you’re a devotee of all things maximalist or your tastes run a little neater, you can make the 1970s aesthetic work for you. For an understated look, go with simple tiles and pair them with mid-century furniture or sleek wooden pieces. But if “more is more” is right up your cluttered alley, well then, there’s no end to your options.
Perfectly suited hues like avocado green, marigold yellow, burnt orange and chocolate brown add a cheery punch – or give your shower the Studio 54 treatment with a dash of disco-inspired metallic. For ’70s-style drama, include tiles with pattern or texture, glossy glaze, over-the-top florals and funky geometric shapes. And don’t forget terrazzo: the old flooring favourite is back in all its bespeckled glory.
