Constantia Family Home

Architect and designer Hanno de Swardt of Onnah Design was given a blank canvas to create the interiors of this welcoming family home in Constantia, Cape Town.

Based on the relaxed country style of the house, designed by architect Jaclyn Cattell, Hanno felt it was important that the interiors suited the owners’ lifestyles. “For me, this house is a home and a true reflection of its owners’ personalities,” says Hanno. “That is why it is such a success and a feast for the eyes. Even though the property is characterised by a fairly large footprint, the interior scale and volume is contained, calm and homely.”

The formal lounge is a visually strong, resolved space in a classic palette, with subtle hints of gold, while the Red Room sees the unusually harmonious use of red and purple. “The colours and textures work extremely well and make for an interesting interior story,” says Hanno.

The master bathroom features a stand-alone tub that leads out onto its own balcony – a summer night’s dream. Custom-made furniture pieces include the dining room’s artful Bloukrans Server dining table by Pierre Cronje, upholstery by Bespoke Living, three coffee tables in each of the lounges by Tinsley Woodcrafters, and high-gloss black joinery in the study by Instyle Creations.
