WORDS Nikki Benatar
Meyer von Wielligh’s exquisitely crafted wooden furniture is set apart by their environmentally responsible, inspired-by-nature design sensibility.
Norman Meyer and Abrie von Wielligh have been designing and manufacturing organic, tactile furniture from their factory in George for the past six years. They set up the business together after graduating from Furntech in George, where they met while studying furniture-making.
At the core of all their designs is an inherent love of nature and respect for the materials employed: “We only use timber,” explains Abrie. “We respect the beauty of wood and try to showcase this in all our designs. I believe that’s why our clients always want to touch our pieces.”
Each tree has a unique story to tell. Abrie explains: “The Intsomi sideboard (the Xhosa word for ‘story’), for example, is made from the pith of an oak tree. We integrated the feet into the design to create an interplay between positive and negative space.”
