Who knew rapper Ice Cube studied architectural drafting before making it big in the music game?
Using this academic background Ice Cube has teamed up with Pacific Standard Time (an initiative of the Getty with arts institutions across Southern California) to explore the home of Ray and Charles Eames. In the short video Ice Cube eloquently discusses the Eames and their revolutionary contribution to modern architecture.
Strolling around the legendary architect couple’s home in Pacific Palisades the rapper explains why the Eames House, along with others in Los Angeles, creates an idiosyncratic architectural landscape that most people take for granted.
In an interview with the New York Times Ice Cube said he jumped at the chance to be a part of Pacific Standard Time’s sprawling campaign to promote Southern Californian art. “What was appealing was showing off Los Angeles to people who think they know what Los Angeles is all about… Everybody who comes here thinks they got the place figured out, but you can never get this place figured out.”
Ice Cube’s video is the third in a series of artist/performer collaborations for Pacific Standard Time. Actor Jason Schwartzman celebrates artist John Balderssari and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis takes a drive with artist Ed Ruscha.
