For her latest assignment at design school, Marize Conradie created a good-looking storage solution for easy access to her collection of VISI magazines. The newest intern at our Cape Town office tells us more about her clever design.
Marize: “Ok so it’s thrilling to discover that there’s still space to shove laundry under the bed, stuff a cupboard with odds and ends lying around or just to toss it all in a bin. But throwing away magazines? Never! Especially those that are not just purchased as a random act of kindness at a traffic light – that would be a minor issue.
“So when a design brief at college met a personal need, I was delighted and went into designer-selfish mode. The assignment: design any form of Perspex box.
“Jewellery box? Another one? CDs? It’s all on the ’pod. Shoes? Too much Perspex would be required. Magazines? Yes. Magazines… lots of them. And especially them VISI ones… The result? I now have a home for my VISI collection.
“I decided to design a Perspex box that is multifunctional, yet simple. Stack the box with VISI magazines and you’ve got a rainbow of stripes; turn it on its side and it’s filing turned glam; remove the dividers on the inside and it’s a regular storage container with nifty carry-holes nogal.”
