International design events in July

July marks the beginning of a worldwide fair, festival and trade show frenzy. We take a look at some of the most exciting events happening in various corners of the globe this month.

As we type, the Tokyo Design Products Fair is treating guests and locals alike to an array of interlinking fairs with gifts, baby and kids products, tableware and fashionable items all promoting “marketable design” at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre.

Tokyo Design is now in its second year running and designs from all over the world will be showcased until 8 July.

While the fairs sound enticing enough, the Protolab exhibit is what really has us begging to jump on the next flight east. This special exhibit area features local Japanese design talents who have been presented with the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world. The categories this year – lighting, chairs, loudspeakers, dustboxes/trashbins and disaster prevention products – have seen designers create some 30 astounding prototypes. Business partners and industry experts in turn will scour these prototypes, turning some of them into commercial realities.

In just over a week’s time, Manchester will be a flurry of buyers, forecasters and other furniture folk as the Manchester Furniture Show kicks off.

The show sells out every English Summer and this year should be no exception. With well-known brands like Willis & Gambier, Morris Furniture Group, BM Furniture, Harrison Brothers and 136 other exhibitors, anyone with a fetish for furniture will surely get their fix.

A chance to solidify industry relationships, and get a peek at what the competition is up to, The Manchester Furniture Show is the place to be if you’re in the game. The show runs from 1–20 July.

Down south in Melbourne, Decoration + Design – in conjunction with Furnitex and Lightsource – is set to impress from 21–24 July. Decoration + Design is Australia’s largest interiors event that brings together an unrivalled range of soft furnishings, outdoor decoration, artwork, homeware, objets d’art, lighting, interior accessories, hotel and hospitality trends and more.

Visitors will be given the chance to view upcoming trends and collections from over 200 Australian and international exhibitors, while seminars from leaders in the design community are set to inspire and inform.
