Cool Spaces: Doppio Zero at Harvest Place

Story Design Collective’s Creative Director Jackie Fitzgerald chats to VISI about the new Mediterranean-inspired Doppio Zero restaurant at Harvest Place in Joburg.

What is the concept behind the cafe?

Our client requested a space that spoke to Doppio Zero’s Mediterranean roots that we interpreted in a contemporary, understated way.

What is the inspiration behind the design? Any local designers/artists used?

The Mediterranean approach was the starting point but I dislike restaurants feeling overly themed, so we used organic textures and shapes to give this space a simple, cohesive look. Cara Saven wallpaper was used to add a feature to the double-volume space.

What mood were you trying to convey and what materials did you use?

We wanted to create a light, easy space where people could relax and escape their busy lives for an hour. We incorporated the following materials – raw plaster, rattan, timber and marble. A huge part of making a design work cohesively is the combination of textures. It’s a subtle thing that makes one feel at ease in a space.

Tell us a bit about your design studio and its ethos.

We approach every new project with a fresh view, each one is unique, and we always avoid cookie-cutter designs. We like to be very attentive to each client’s specific needs and design accordingly. I would say our aim is to create timeless yet memorable spaces that people can enjoy.

What are some key/standout features and elements?

I like the slightly imperfect look of the alcoves. I am also happy with all the joinery elements we designed – we enjoy doing softer, curved edges. I think the open kitchen partially shielded by the steel windows works really well to bring the element of food theatre to the customer and adds vibrancy to the space.

What did you love about the project?

I loved that our client trusted us to go with this understated look and supported our vision for the space.
