Willowlamp customises its largest-ever art chandeliers for the new Crown Perth Hotel in Australia in a design feat that weighs in at 12 tonnes.
Adam Hoets, the Creative Director and Founder of award-winning South African lighting design company Willowlamp, was commissioned by Australian-based architectural firm Bates Smart to design the monumental series of four chandeliers for the lobby of the hotel.
The largest created and installed project by Willowlamp to date posed a unique challenge to Hoets as the chandeliers, weighing in at three tonnes each, needed to be installed on a seven-metre high ceiling. Each cluster was broken up into modules with concealed dropped tiers to reduce the overall weight. Each of the four clusters encompass 20 000 m of ball chain and 150 LED G9 lamps.
The project is as breathtaking as it is a technical triumph. The chandeliers are a customised variation of an existing Willowlamp design called Mandala Number 1, which is inspired by sacred geometric patterns. The new design reflects the same inspiration source but has a more feminine aspect to it with strong Eastern influences. The aesthetically arresting shape reflects something of the inverted archways of the world-renowned Taj Majal.
