10 Trends From The Milan Furniture Fair

Aidan Hart, creative director at Inhouse Brand Architects, recently returned from the Milan Furniture Fair. Showcasing the latest and greatest innovations in the design world, this prestigious event is a thrilling extravaganza that continues to delight design aficionados from around the globe. Here, he offers us his top 10 trends, straight from Milan.

1. Bright and Bold Rugs: Rugs go loud in an array of kaleidoscopic colour, woven into beautiful and bold botanical and galactic prints.

2. Shadowy Colour: Muted colours abound with a prevalence of soft, shadowy shades. Think dusty pinks, mustard and subdued green tones.

3. Textural Fusion: Thanks to the latest technology, the ingenious use of steel in different texture combinations (including leather, rope and mesh) was seen throughout the Fair.

4. Painterly Treatments: Although the watercolour print has reigned supreme for the last couple of years, there is now a shift towards the painterly, with watercolour treatments seen on textiles and even plywood.

5. Taking a Cue From Nature: Designers have veered away from the synthetic. There is greater use of natural materials in product design, including paper, ceramics and timber.

6. 3D Printing: 3D printing continues to revolutionise the industry. Objects are becoming more intricate with incredible detail and hand-painted finishes.

7. Marble Turns Mysterious: Darker marbles are increasingly edging in on the traditional Carrera marble. The use of rich browns, blacks and charcoals adds an energised element to spaces.

8. Bronze Adornment: Bronze and copper are still strong trends, seen particularly in smaller objects, as well as being used in furniture frames.

9. Deconstructed Detail: Many of the furniture pieces on display featured visible thread and stitching detail. Adding nuance and texture, the incorporation of these details lends a contemporary feel to furniture design.

10. Rigorous Transparency: The grid finish hasn’t been completely retired just yet, but the use of metal, mesh and perforated materials shows the interesting progression of this trend. Adding an element of transparency to screens, cabinets and more is a trend we can expect to see on the local scene very soon.
