It was announced at Design Indaba on Friday 23 February 2018 that the Tutu 2.0 Pendant Light by Creative Director Thabisa Mjo of interior and product design company Mash.T Design Studio, is the winner of 2018’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa.
Thabisa, who describes her style as contemporary, African-influenced design, combines the look of a classic ballerina tutu with a Xibelani skirt, traditionally worn by Tsonga women. “It’s an African version of a tutu,” she says in a clip for Design Indaba.
The shade is woven using wool and hundreds of beads.
The design was nominated by entrepreneur Thato Kgatlhanye.
