London-based design practice Openstudio Architects has released a new short film about Swartberg House, a holiday home in the Karoo that VISI previously featured here, back in 2015.

Made in collaboration with South Africa-based cinematographer Tatjana Meirelles, the film is currently showing at the TIME SPACE EXISTENCE exhibition in Palazzo Mora as part of the Venice Biennale until 25 November 2018.

The preview, seen above, is narrated by Openstudio Architects’ principal architect Jennifer Beningfield, and explores the relationship between the house and its location.

“The Swartberg House has been designed to harvest the passage of time and light, and variations in heat and cold, to allow the inhabitants to develop an intense awareness of natural cycles of days and seasons, and the landscape in which the house is built,” says Jennifer on the Openstudio Architects website. “The movements of a young girl, a young woman and an older woman activate the screens and the house. Without human interaction the house lies dormant, save for the movement and sounds of wind, birds and animals.”
