VISI 97 IS HERE: The Spring Issue

visi 97

Here at VISI HQ our mission is to listen to you, our readers, and to provide you with inspiration and solutions in print and online.

This is one of the reasons our dynamic online editor Lindi Brownell Meiring has been sharing the results of her online surveys on the VISI.co.za page in the magazine (page 20). In our previous issue, Lindi reported that in answer to the question which item in the home you’d be prepared to splurge on, 48% of the 1 200 readers who responded chose a brand-new sofa. We listened, and in this issue you stand to win a chesterfield-style sofa, worth R33 000 (page 156). This pale-grey leather beauty from Incanda would work equally well in a modern or traditional interior. And if that’s not enough, you could also win furniture worth R30 000 from the incomparable Private Collections (page 186) to celebrate the relocation of its showroom to new premises in Gardens, Cape Town.

Talking about gardens and it being spring… In this issue our focus is on nature. All the spaces we feature on these pages extend the nature theme to include plants in and outside the home. There is a newly built weekend bolthole in Dullstroom that almost totally recedes into a lake-speckled valley; a home in the Midlands built out of reclaimed materials collected over years by the owners; and a cottage on the slopes of Table Mountain where “indoor plants” take on a whole new meaning. Then there is a Michael Sutton-designed Johannesburg house that is surrounded by lush greenery; the Norval Foundation in Steenberg with its beautiful indigenous garden designed by Keith Kirsten; and a cottage between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek where a French couple live with an abundance of indoor plants.

In terms of design, which is, of course, our main focus, deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes returned from Salone del Mobile in Milan with one clear mantra: “Looking back, moving forward”. In other words, it’s all about reinventing designs from the archives to produce objects in new and innovative ways. Find out all about this new direction on page 126.

On the local front, we’re the proud media partner of the Nando’s Portal to Africa. Take a look at the collection of amazing local designs Nando’s is taking to the world stage on page 44.

And because the weather is still a bit deurmekaar, we continue to spend a fair amount of time in my favourite room in the house, the kitchen. In our Reasons section (page 125) you’ll find the lowdown on all the latest kitchen designs and some more great giveaways.

So enjoy the crisp days of spring and the slow slide into summer, when we will surprise you with lots more local inspiration.
