Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, Vrede is a reimagined lock-up-and-go holiday apartment by Matter Studio that serves as an ode to raw materials and the honesty of their natural beauty.
With a focus on natural textures and locally sourced elements, Matter Studio brings a uniquely South African narrative to life in the form of Vrede. The earthy interiors embody the architectural and interior design studio’s commitment to honest materials that convey a meaningful spatial narrative.
The project brief called for a “calm and honest” space, which Matter Studio answered by emphasising natural colours and using textures to subtly define different zones within the apartment.
To imbue the compact space with a sense of flow and seamlessness, the designers used the same wall and floor finishes throughout to unify the rooms and expand the sense of openness. This continuity not only enhances the spatial flow but also allows each room to feel naturally connected, giving Vrede a serene, uncluttered vibe.

Wood, especially walnut, is the core material that runs throughout Vrede, adding layers of warmth to every interior space. Textures and colours are intentionally natural with tactile elements, like the striking millstone table, reinforcing Vrede’s raw aesthetic. Some furnishings were custom-made, while others were sourced from local brands and antique shops to reflect a local narrative and present an honest sense of place.
Matter Studio’s favourite moments of the apartment are the late summer afternoons when shadows start moving through the apartment and the ceiling fan slowly moves cool air around. These dynamics add an extra layer of beauty to the slow-living interior of the space. | matterstudio.co.za
