Portuguese-based architecture studio MUTANT Architecture & Design tilted the volume of this house to create an unexpected and dynamic living space revolving around lines and angles.
The brief for the project was to create a one-story house – to be built on a morphologically regular terrain in the residential neighbourhood of Gondomar, east of Porto. Facing two different streets, on different levels, the dwelling uses height, lines and angles to create an interesting and smart solution to building on a gradient. Playing with mathematics and geometry, volume was generated by the action of tilting the main shape along three axes.
The main area of the house is designed to inspire a sensation of movement, with sharp angles, gradients, lines and levels. MUTANT Architecture & Design came up with the concept of TILT for the build with parts of the house appearing disconnected, fitting together like a puzzle or a Rubik’s cube. Sections of the house look like they may be able to move independently from each other, creating an illusion of mobility and paying homage to the cubism movement. The ceiling height changes with the increase in volume and the pool, and patio area look into the dramatic living space.
The sun and its movement were taken into careful consideration, ensuring that the angles of the home are fitted with windows to receive optimal natural light throughout the day. The master suite approaches the southernmost part of this volume and in turn, connects to the pool area. The kitchen was located in the centre of the house, enhancing the different relationships with the various spaces that make up the program. The room is set in a central area of the land, benefiting from east/south/west sunlight and where it is possible for the user to have a broad visual relationship with the external surroundings.
In order to guarantee privacy and at the same time maintain the quality of light inside, two patios were designed, one in the office and the other in the bathroom of the suite.
Rolling lawns and an accessible rooftop round up the imaginative project.
