That Art Fair

February continues to be an important month in Cape Town’s creative calendar. In addition to Design Indaba, GUILD and Cape Town Art Fair, those who will be in the city can also look forward to That Art Fair, an event featuring African artists who do things a little differently and work under the radar of the traditional art establishment.

“We’re passionate about nurturing young creative talent and building a fresh generation of art collectors and audiences,” says fair organiser, Brendon Bell-Roberts, the editor and publisher of Art South Africa magazine. The art and creative sectors in Africa are exploding right now, says Brendon, and will do so for some time. “This is the perfect time for this kind of fair, which embraces artists who have not yet been recognised by the establishment.”

Attendees can expect to see a wide variety of work including sculpture, fashion, photography and performance art. Famed political cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro’s work will be on show as part of an exhibition dedicated to comic art. Fashion devotees will get a treat in the form of the Skattie Celebrates exhibition, curated by popular fashion website Skattie, What Are You Wearing?’s editors, Malibongwe Tyilo and Sandiso Ngubane. The exhibition will see artists translate their work onto a capsule fashion range. Fine arts and design auctioneers Stephan Welz & Co. will host Future Masters, an exhibition featuring mid-career artists, whose work has been chosen due to their proven track record.

Those looking for a party will get one in the form of That Art Party on the opening night, the 27th of February, which features popular band The Brother Moves On, and DJ sets by musician Spoek Mathambo and 2015 Standard Bank Performance Artist Of The Year Athi-Patra Ruga.

That Art Fair runs from 27th Feb to 1st March at The Parkade, 121 Cecil Road, Salt River, Cape Town. A weekend pass costs R100 online and R120 at the door. A one-day pass is R50 online and R60 at the door. For more information, visit thatartfair.com or follow @ThatArtFair on Twitter.
