Sustainable Design: Caventou

London-based design studio Caventou creates functional household objects and furniture that, using a similar process to photosynthesis, provide electricity by using the sun’s rays.

Founded by Marjan van Aubel in 2015, Caventou received a Wallpaper Design Award in 2015 for their sustainable developments.

Caventou has created two main solar energy objects. The Current Window uses the latest solar cell technology to generate electricity from light. Dye-sensitised solar cells work under the same principles as photosynthesis, changing colour properties into electricity for charging and providing energy for appliances and devices. The larger the surface area of the window, the more energy is harvested.

The Current Table’s glass surface is made up of integrated solar cells much like the Current Window. The Current Table uses no wires and is the first indoor energy harvesting device, perfect for a sustainable home or office.
