VISI Picks of the Week Series – Week 195

COMPILED BY VISI

From eye-catching paintings, gloopy ice-cream paintbrushes and a bakery in Madrid to the newly released theatrical trailer for Loving Vincent, these are the top VISI picks of the week series – week 195.

1. Porthole Window Apartments

“This modernist block of apartments in Melbourne, Australia was designed by BKK Architects,” says Features Writer Amelia Brown. “The huge porthole windows, set in the staggered brick facades, bathe the rooms in natural light, adding a voyeuristic edge to the theme and design.” This space can be decorated with Handre Bloem’s range of bespoke, handcrafted furniture made in South Africa.

2. Brian Calvin’s Paintings

“Brian Calvin is a Californian artist known for his highly stylised flattened paintings,” says Content Producer Mary Garner. “His light-soaked portraits, which appear animatedly life-like, feature characters in mid-action, giving movement to the images.”

3. Juana Limón Bakery and Coffee Shop

“This 50 square-metre Madrid-based bakery, designed by Lucas y Hernández-Gil, caught my eye this week,” says Online Editor Lindi Brownell Meiring. “I love that the space is made up of hand-painted tiles and custom-designed furniture.”

4. Gloopy Ice Cream-Like Paintbrushes

“Portuguese visual artist José Lourenço takes pictures of paintbrushes covered in thick, oozing paint,” says Head of Content: Decor, Tracy Greenwood. “The rainbow-like shades makes one think of how the paint itself is an artwork before it’s even used.”

4. New Trailer: Loving Vincent

“The latest trailer has been released for Loving Vincent, which is the world’s first fully oil painted feature film, made up of 65 000 frames,” says Art Director Anton Pietersen. “Written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, the film tells the story of Vincent van Gogh’s life.”
