Tristan du Plessis, of local interior design and architecture firm StudioA, recently redesigned the News Cafe in Joburg’s Rosebank, the first outlet to take on a new look.
The brief was to “create a News Cafe that is a step in a new direction for the brand, placing importance on artisanal cocktails and craft beer paired with a broad and interesting new menu,” explains Tristan.
The overall aesthetic exudes a raw, urban feel. The interior makes use of reconstructed wood panelling, raw brick, marble and 3D slatted feature walls. A large sign inspired by downtown New York hangs over the bar, creating a soft, glowing atmosphere. “The back bar wall detail is a face chipped from pre-existing plaster in painstaking detail and the central four-metre long chandelier is made from recycled pieces of glass bottles and strung together in copper wire by a team of people from a local underprivileged community,” says Tristan.
