New Hot Spot: Mink & Trout

WORDS Michaela Stehr IMAGES Shavan Rahim

A beautiful new restaurant called Mink & Trout has opened its doors on Cape Town’s happening Bree Street.

The space, which used to house Birds restaurant, has been reimagined by ATTIK Design. The brief was to transform the space into an original yet unpretentious wine bar and bistro with a relaxed and comfortable feel, as well as an edge of sophistication. Statement pieces needed to add flair to the space with materials such as exposed heritage brickwork, velvet fabric, porcelain tile and raw and sprayed steel, bringing in elements of texture.

“The herringbone floor tiles are beautiful,” says Brigid White of Attik Design. “The custom made chandelier above the bar counter and the sprayed brass and copper storage unit are the lead elements of the restaurant. The colour scheme was inspired by the name Mink & Trout. We wanted to symbolise land and water through colour and texture. The soft fabrics, luxurious blue-grey tones and mirror surfaces symbolise water, while the olive greens, gold, leathery fabrics and raw textures are symbolic of the earth.”

Bar stools from Nieuw Design, custom lighting from The Artisan and crockery from The Potter’s Gallery incorporate local designers into the space.

Mink & Trout is situated at 127 Bree Street and is open for lunch Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 3:30pm and dinner from Monday to Saturday 6:30pm to 11pm. Call 021 426 2534 for reservations.
