We’ve been so excited about the release of Loving Vincent, the world’s first fully painted feature film about the life of Vincent van Gogh, having previously featured it on VISI twice prior to its completion.
Tonight, this groundbreaking film will premiere at the Design Indaba Festival, before opening nationwide from 23 February 2018.
Haven’t heard about this film yet? Here are some must-know facts:
- It was written and directed by Dorota Kobiela, in partnership with co-writer, co-director and producer Hugh Welchman of Oscar-winning studio BreakThru Films.
- The film is made up of over 65 000 frames – that means every single frame is a different oil painting created by a group of 125 professional oil painters.
- The film was initially shot using actors before the frame was then hand-painted in oils.
- The film is made up of 94 of Vincent’s paintings (in a form that’s almost identical to the original) and 31 more paintings featured both substantially and partially.
On how the idea for Loving Vincent originated, Dorota Kobiela says, “I decided I wanted to combine my two passions – painting and film – and make a painted film. I was 30 when I came up with the idea to do Loving Vincent, the same age that Vincent was when he started painting.”
