Headed up by designer Siyanda Mbele, Pinda Furniture is a KwaZulu-Natal-based furniture and interior design brand that creates functional, modern pieces inspired by aspects of local culture.
Having thought about furniture design in 2009, it was only in 2013 while doing his final year in Interior Design at Durban University of Technology that Siyanda started making furniture. “In my teens I wanted to be a car designer, so from an early age, I have always known that I would be a designer,” says Siyanda.
This year, Pinda Furniture’s Mvelo Desk was nominated by Creative Director Trevor Stuurman as one of the 10 Most Beautiful Objects in South Africa at Design Indaba.
“The concept of the Mvelo desk is derived from how people are married to their careers, and the amount of time and days spent using a desk,” says Siyanda. “I then made an analogy using Zulu symbols/Zulu chevrons. The form of the desk represents both masculine (triangle) and feminine (diamond). What interested me the most in the Zulu symbols is when two symbols are joined together, whether triangle or diamond, they represent a union. I translated that union as people being married to their desks/careers.”
Pinda Furniture’s range also includes the colourful Nandini Coffee Table, the geometric solid oak Ndalo Nesting Tables, inspired by Ndebele patterns, and the stackable Pinda Side Tables, made from a combination of steel and birch plywood. Next up for Siyanda will be an expanded lighting collection.
