Local Craft Beer Labels We Love

WORDS Ashraf Booley

Many local craft breweries’ packaging has become as visually pleasing to the eye as their beer is pleasurable to the palate.

DARLING BREW: Taking their cue from nature, Philippa and Kevin Wood create flavourful brews while highlighting endangered species. The decidedly bright and bold labels are designed by friend Carlos Simoes with input from Kevin. BEST SELLER: Slow Beer STYLE OF BEER: Slow fermentation and conditioning.

CAPE BREWING COMPANY: Imperial IPA

DRIFTER: Legend Lager

GROWLER BREWING CO: Bushveld Blonde Ale

JACK BLACK’S BREWING CO.: In collaboration with freelance designer Dan Goodman, the folk at Jack Black’s opted for a nostalgic approach. “We wanted to create a label that would remind people of the pre-Prohibition era,” says Robert McCulloch of Jack Black’s. Hence the retro look. BEST SELLER: Brewer’s Lager, STYLE OF BEER: Traditional methods using a Kaspar Schulz German brewhouse system.

WOODSTOCK BREWERY: Pot Belge Amber Ale

SXOLLIE: This award-winning South African cider brand loves local. When asked about the label design, Laura Clacey, who together with her husband Karol Ostaszewski owns Sxollie, says: “It had to be proudly South African- from the colour palette to the design. The use of the X’es is inspired by African pottery.

TWO OKES BREWERY: Blonde Ale
