WORDS: Michelle Coburn
Structural, simple and comfortable – we think the Twist Terrace Chair by Richard Stretton, a.k.a. Koop Design, adds sophisticated style to any indoor-outdoor space.
The Durban-based architect and furniture designer has made a name for himself in recent years for his commitment to hand-crafting his designs, creating buildings and products guided by principles of responsible, eco-sensitive design. What began as a one-man show that involved Richard making his furniture at home, has evolved into a commercial workshop that specialises in producing alien-wood pieces for the Koop store in Glenwood.
The Twist Terrace Chair is the latest addition to the Twist range, which is ‘inspired by the way wood can be machined to deliver structural strength’. Solid timber is cut to achieve maximum slenderness, creating a clean-lined frame that holds the beautifully woven back and seat. The chair is available in a choice of poplar or maple, a hard wood with a subtle grain. The webbing for the seat and back of the Twist Terrace Chair is available in black, grey, or a gorgeously bold fuschia. It’s the perfect new addition to a balcony or patio overlooking the pool, the bush, or the sea.
