Liam Mooney’s fabulous Folded Coffee Table is an origami-inspired design in which he’s crafted wood to make it look as pliable as paper.
The Folded Coffee Table has been getting loads of “oohs” and “aahs” from visitors to the Cape-based furniture and product designer’s striking new shop in Wale Street.
Liam says that, since positioning the eye-catching creation at the front of the store, he’s been fielding questions about the inspiration behind his design.
“It was actually really simple. I found that, after simply playing around with folding pieces of paper, I ended up with a ribbon and started wondering how I could make it into something. Steel seemed like too much of an obvious choice, and Perspex certainly wasn’t a new idea. Eventually, I decided wood seemed different – impossible, even, to shape in this way. Though I must say, the whole process was incredibly easy in the end.”
The Folded Coffee Table is made from American poplar, frequently chosen for furniture-making and joinery. The wood is straight grained, fine textured and fairly soft and light. Liam sourced it from a sustainable source approved by the Forest Stewardship Council and gave it a clear, satin duco finish.
