Just art, art, art in Joburg

There’s only one thing on our minds this weekend: Art. Besides the official Joburg Art Fair running from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September, there’s also the Joburg Fringe as well as Str.crd and a few public art walkabouts.

The Joburg Fringe is out in full force this year, setting up right across the road from the Fair, in Sandton City at Shop U22. This is the place to pick up something edgy by an artist working outside of the constraints of the gallery system. There is also a video art show in the foyer of the Theatre on the Bay.

Meanwhile in the city, everyone who is hip, funky and sartorially inclined – or trying to be – will be flocking to Constitutional Hill for Str.crd until Sunday 29 September to celebrate the pillars of youth culture: fashion, music, sneakers, graffiti, skate, dance, photography and culture.

In Maboneng, visual artist and professional photographer Hannelie Coetzee will be hosting two walkabouts of her public artworks on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September respectively, both starting at 4pm. The walks start off at Hannelie’s mural on Fox Street. All for free but donations are welcome, and will go towards research for new artworks.
