VISI has built its reputation on a discerning eye for beautiful objects. Unsurprisingly our editor Jacquie Myburgh was asked to nominate an item for the Design Indaba MBOISA (Most Beautiful Object In South Africa). We’re delighted to tell you her choice was spot on.
The Kirsten Goss signature ‘Lilypad’ ring, handcrafted by a team of highly skilled goldsmiths working with Kirsten in Durban, was crafted especially for the award and is a limited edition design. There are only 24 rings available, and after this announcement it is clear Jacquie isn’t the only person who covets one.
The unique piece is wrought in a contrasting combination of 18kt gold vermeil and sterling silver, in an organic double layer design and then set with an exquisite facetted green amethyst. The stone centerpiece, a naturally subtle green amethyst, is brought to life by the highly polished top layer it’s snugly settled within. The reverse gives a cool twist to the piece with an unexpected contrast of textured sterling silver, reiterating Kirsten’s intrinsic attention to detail and use of contrasting metal finishes.
The ring is currently being exhibited at Merchants on Long in Cape Town, but will also be displayed in London and New York in the near future – as the team heads overseas for upcoming shows.
The ‘Lilypad’ ring was up against nine other entries, which as a collection spanned every feasible medium of design including ceramics, textiles and even architecture; showing that there really are no bounds or pre-established notions of beauty for this award. The top ten were then given one month to be put to public vote and the winner was announced on the closing day of the Design.
“We are so humbled to have been nominated alongside such esteemed designers and craftsmen. To have won is startling and thrilling, a totally extraordinary moment,” says Kirsten Goss.
