Innercity drool

WORDS Lisa Johnston

We can barely keep up with the pace at which Maboneng is growing these days (read some of our articles here). The Townhouse is an über-chic man cave with the kind of modcons and furnishings that would satisfy Batman himself.

If Batman were to take residence in Johannesburg it would be easy to imagine him living in The Townhouse. Situated on the fourth floor of the Fox Street Studio development in the Maboneng Precinct, the 282 square metre apartment offers a 270-degree view of the city through its three glass walls. There’s even more to see if you step outside to the wraparound deck, where a whiff of easy-to-maintain nature is provided by landscaped window boxes and vertical gardens.

The industrial beams that support the triple-glazed glass walls are softened by the manly tones and textures – bamboo flooring, leather furnishings, matt-black wood with copper accents and linen. The downstairs section includes a TV lounge with a circular curtain that can be drawn for privacy and to make it cosy, although the Morsø fireplace is likely to do a good job of keeping the entire apartment warm. There’s also a guest bathroom so no-one has to traipse upstairs to use the facilities.

An open-plan kitchen, with hidden utility areas, looks over the main lounge and dining area, broken only by a spiral staircase leading to the bedroom area. The bed, like the TV lounge, can be closed off from the rest of the space via a circular curtain. There’s also a TV upstairs, but this can be dropped down and hidden in the custom-built cabinet below. A section between the bed and en suite bathroom serves as a study area with built-in desk and a high-speed Internet connection. The en suite bathroom boasts a spacious bath, double shower and his-and-hers vanities.

Safety is assured through fingerprint access control, underground parking and 24-hour security.  Should Batman require some leisure time-off from saving the world, he can always nip downstairs to one of the precincts’ restaurants, bars, galleries or, even, a movie. And as for that pesky city afternoon traffic? No problem – have batmobile, will fly!

The Townhouse is the latest offering from Propertuity, the urban developers behind the Maboneng Precinct. Daffonchio & Associates are the architects responsible for the project, while Malica Interior Designs have taken care of the interior decor and design. The Townhouse is on sale for R4-million.
