Illustrators We Love: Fran Labuschagne

INTERVIEWED BY Lindi Brownell Meiring

Nomadic South African illustrator Fran Labuschagne chats to VISI about how she got into illustration, why she loves creating animations and what’s next on her agenda.

Where are you currently based?

That is a good question :)

My husband and I are quite nomadic and like to move around quite often. We both share a love for travel and the change that comes with it. We are currently travelling in Vietnam, so I guess you could say we’re based here for now.

When did you first realise you wanted to become an artist?

I’ve always loved drawing and creating, but never really saw myself as an illustrator. It wasn’t until my third year of studying graphic design, that to my delight, I realised that drawing pictures can be a full-time career.

How would you describe your style?

My style is still kind of finding its feet, but it’s very much a product of my personality. I guess you could describe my style as sophisticated, with a playful twist and maybe a feminine touch.

You’re also into creating animations. What do you most enjoy about this medium?

Yes, I love animation, although I don’t do it nearly as often as I should. I love the way animation can breathe so much life into an illustration.

What’s next for Fran?

Who even knows?! I don’t like to make plans too far into the future, as I change my mind very frequently. “What is a mind if you can’t change it”, right? However, I do see myself drawing for many years to come. I’m not sure where all this drawing will take place, but I guess time will tell.

I’m also experimenting with some other styles and mediums with a make-believe studio called Fijnbosch (@studiofijnbosch). I’m not sure were it’s headed yet, but it’s a process I enjoy very much and hope I can explore another side of my creativity through this new venture.
