Designer Peta-Lee Woolf’s felt furnishings tap into the worldwide yearning for tactile homeware.
People didn’t even know what felt was – they only knew snooker tables – when Peta-Lee Woolf turned from fashion-design lecturer to accessories and decor designer in 2005. However, she has witnessed the sea change, as she steadily built up her business, exhibiting at Design Indaba in Cape Town and Ambiente in Frankfurt every year.
Describing the continued drive towards more tactile home furnishings, she explains: “With the yearning for a simpler life, away from the oversupply of technology that has become the norm, as well as the fast pace of human existence, organic and natural fibres in home furnishings have become a luxury, which balances our feelings in a world that we cannot always control.”
Having been ahead of the game with organic natural fibres, sustainable Fair Trade practices and unique rather than mass-produced products for years, it sometimes scares her: “I mean, what is going to come next?” laughs Peta-Lee.
We proclaim jubilantly: more of the same! More tantalisingly touchy-feely home comforts to transport us away from the cold abstraction of technology. It’s more than a fad, it’s a movement.
For Peta-Lee, however, every year demands something innovative and at this year’s Design Indaba she launched a range of screen-printed felt, adding an entirely new layer of depth to her stunning, tactile wares.
