From woven lamp shades and an eco-friendly table to bespoke ceramic dishes, industrial designer and Design Indaba Emerging Creative Ashlee Ainsley Lloyd is a maker of beautiful things.
The 23-year-old Cape Town-based designer finds her inspirations in the diversity of South African craft and the complexity of forms found in nature. Ashlee aims to create pieces that are both functional and emotionally engaging. Each one of her pieces is handmade and express an obvious dedication to detail and her passion for design. Ashlee completed her degree at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and received cum laude for her written thesis on managing wastewater in urban households.
Ashlee’s unique lighting designs see the utilisation of woven natural and synthetic materials, shipping rope, crochet, knot-making and experimental use of patterns. Apart from her lights, she has also designed unique pieces of furniture and homeware including ceramics, a coffee table that features a woven magazine rack and a grey water purifier. Ashlee’s designs see the tasteful blend of artisanal craft and industrial design through the combination of intricately woven textiles, machined industrial materials and woodcraft.
