The design of Janse & Co, a new Kloof Street eatery in Cape Town that opened on 14 December 2017, is inspired by a minimalist approach to dining.
Mardre Meyer, the Creative Director of Source IBA, was heavily involved in the design of this chic space, which is headed up by chef Arno Janse van Rensburg in partnership with pastry chef Liezl Odendaal. It features a sophisticated dark grey colour palette that incorporates pops of colour and natural elements.
The interiors were created with experience top of mind, a place where guests can enjoy three to seven course tasting menus, each focused on particular ingredients. The design, with a focus of minimalism, called for efficient use of space and the need for three different dining areas.
The “harvest table”, created by Cape Town-based furniture designer James Mudge, is situated at the entrance to the eatery in an area that encourages sharing amongst bigger groups. A Coronation Bench from Houtlander has been placed in front of the feature wall created by artist Claire Homewood of One Love Studio, a mural inspired by edible and seasonal flowers. The mural will change annually to incorporate different ingredients that inspire Arno and his team.
The main formal dining area, which looks onto the kitchen areas, features a monotone palette, with black walls, tables, and chairs designed by Dark Horse. “It was very important for us to have comfortable chairs in the restaurant,” says Arno.
The equally stylish outside courtyard, complete with Prague chairs and a hydroponic system for 250 herbs and leaves, is the perfect spot to relax.
