Chair One

World Cup fever lingers on in South Africa with a new soccer-ball inspired chair.

Chair One, designed by Konstantin Grcic for Magis, is now available from Crema in three different varieties.

“Chair One is constructed just like a football, with a number of flat planes assembled at angles to each other, creating the three-dimensional form,” says Konstantin. “I think my approach was a mixture of naivety and bluntness. Given the chance to work with aluminium casting I thought that I should take it all the way. The more we worked on the models the more we learnt to understand the structural logic behind what we were doing.”

The end result is a modern, geometric chair made from polished die-cast aluminium, or in die-cast aluminium treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in polyester powder. Seat cushions are available for the chair, but it is surprisingly comfortable without.

There are three different base options for Chair One: the stacking chair with four legs, the four-star base with swivel option, or the concrete base with swivel option. Colour options include black, white, red, grey and polished die-cast aluminium.

The chair works beautifully inside or out, and is sure to elicit “oohs” and “ahs” from guests, just as it has in the international design market.
