A swing for your patio

Too attached to an old wooden table to give up on it? Annemarie Meintjes demonstrates how a rotting relic can be given new purpose as an eye-catching swinging day bed.

YOU WILL NEED:

1 x wooden table

4 x three-ton Argus towropes (R89,99 each at Builders Warehouse)

1 x upholstered foam mattress (R499,99 at Mr Price Home)

1 x husband or strong helper (we hired Mark Seach from Hire a Husband – R200 for chopping, reinforcing, hanging and testing the support)

THIS IS HOW:

Saw off the legs and reinforce the apron of the table. Using four towropes, suspend the table top from concrete rafters and test the support, then finish off your swing with an upholstered foam mattress of your choice.

It’s best to position your swing at a height slightly lower than that of the original table. That way, it’ll be easy to slip on and off the swinging day bed and – if you take the mattress off – your swing can double up as a floating table top.

We used a striped mattress from Mr Price Home, but you can easily upholster your own. The Silk & Cotton Co. sells 100% cotton red-and-white striped canvas (132 cm wide) for R321/m.
