Join WHATIFTHEWORLD / GALLERY tomorrow for a walkabout and discussion of an exciting new exhibition by artist Renée Holleman.
Titled A Novel In Parts, this exhibition is the first at the gallery’s new premises, housed over two floors of the historical Woodstock synagogue buildings on the corner of Argyle Street and Albert Roads.
Inspired by her local neighbourhood, a certain Argentinian writer and choose-your-own-adventure stories, Renée’s body of work employs the device of the novel to explore a collection of interweaving concerns that draw on history, locale, narratives of progress, abstract fable, visual conundrum and text.
She alludes to different spaces within and without the exhibition, and gaps and dislocations in reading/viewing, while positioning the viewer as an interpretive agent in a diverse body of work that includes drawing, installation, sculpture and sound.
Here at VISI, we’re particularly impressed with her haunting blue-and-white artworks that blur the lines between fact and fiction, depicting a series of sightings of the “Flying Dutchman” in the streets of Cape Town.
WHATIFTHEWORLD now sits in an exciting new art and design hub, which includes Gregor Jenkin’s studio and a soon-to-open showroom for Tonic.
The exhibition will run until 1 October, and the gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am – 5pm and Saturdays from 10am – 2pm.
