Winter’s almost over and we’re excited for spring, so best to make the most of the last few chilly indulgences. It’s also Women’s Day this month with lots of parties and exhibitions celebrating the fairest gender.

Neighbourgoods Market
The Old Biscuit Mill, 373 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town

Every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9am to 2pm, this is the hotspot for locavores. Expect over 100 specialty traders including local farmers, fine-food purveyors, organic merchants, bakers and distributors, grocers, mongers, butchers, artisan producers, celebrated local chefs and micro enterprises – not to forget the designers. Get there early for parking!

V&A Market on The Wharf
Nobel Square, between the Two Oceans Aquarium and the V&A Hotel, Cape Town

The V&A Market on the Wharf is quickly entrenching its position as Cape Town’s ultimate gastronomic destination. An array of artisanal foods, on-site demo kitchens and a kids entertainment area are just a few of its laurels. The market is open all day Wednesday to Sunday. 

Neighbourgoods Market

Every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9am to 3pm, this is the younger cousin of the Cape Town mother event. Not quite as big and epic, but steadily growing alongside the exciting Maboneng Precinct.

I Heart Market

On the first Saturday of every month from 9am to 2pm, Durban’s design and food artisans share their wares at this funky market.

City Bowl Food Market

Every Thursday from 4:30pm to 8:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm, this food and wine market offers easy access to fresh produce and tasty fare. Thursdays in particular have become quite a social affair and Saturdays sometimes also have a fashion component. 

Persephone’s Tears, Water Element

A solo exhibition of oil paintings by Judy Woodborne opens at 11am and runs until 3 August. Judy interpreted the elements of earth, fire, air and water in this series of paintings.

The Shoestring Collective

Until 11 August, the Shoestring Collective is a South African designer goods shop that will be stocked and run by 16 local designers who all make different products including fashion, accessories, homeware and more. Each designer has curated their own space within the shop, including Lauren FowlerOh Dear MeganDark HorseSera Holland and others. 

Fulcrum Study and First Time

Sculptor and photographer Nico Krijno presents Fulcrum Study, which explores the tension between the everyday and the mundane. Painter Kerry Chaloner questions the masculine assumptions of abstract painting in her exhibition, First Time. Until 17 August.

This solo exhibition and sound installation by Espen Krukhaug exploring the realm of insomnia. Until 17 August.

Art Is Design Is Art

The Editions Show

1969 and Tom Waits for No Man

Until 28 August, David Brits’s second solo exhibition, 1969, shows in the Project Room. The group show arranged by Gordon Froud, Tom Waits for No Man, runs concurrently in the main gallery.

#Whileyouwerehustling

Filmmaker Bryan Little and creative director Conn Bertish explore themes of evolution, gentrification, obsessive quests, misfits and outsiders in this multi-media exhibition. Until 31 August.

The Borderlands and Work

Jo Ractliffe continues to explore the aftermath of the war in Angola through her photography in The BorderlandsSimon Gush‘s exhibition, Work, interrogates the central role played by work in the construction and perception of our identities. Until 31 August.

Simon Stone Retrospective

Over a prolific career, Simon Stone has built an impressive reputation as a painter that identifies him as unique among other South African painters. Best described as a lyrical and narrative Neo-Expressionist, Simon is renowned for his various stylistic approaches, such as natural realism and symbolic collage. Until 14 September. 

A Glimpse: Dress and Fashion in Africa
Mogalakwena Craft Art Gallery, 3 Church Street, between Adderly Street and St George’s Mall, Cape Town

Until 19 December 2013, this exhibition showcases African dress and fashion influenced by history, and art inspired by dress and fashion. It provides an overview of the variety, fusion and combination of styles as well as clothing traditions of the continent. A series of hand-embroidered self-portraits by Mogalakwena craft artists in their favourite “diaparo” are on display, as well as a collection of Vlisco fabrics – read more about Vlisco fabrics here.

Don’t Jump Off the Bridge and Between Object and Place

Don’t Jump off Bridge is the first solo exhibition by Johannesburg-based artist Luiza Cachalia and comprises portraits of female protagonists in iconic cinematic roles. Between Object and Place is a solo exhibition by London-based South African artist Helen A Pritchard and purveys an abstract geometric twist.

Ugandan artist Benon Lutaaya manipulates his medium to unearth new and unexpected creative destinations, while exploring the fragility and resilience of his subjects. The exhibition opens at 6pm and runs until 31 August. 

Thinking Design

Opening at 6.30pm and running until Wednesday 28 August, this year’s UJ Department of Industrial Design Alumni Exhibition inverts the term “Design Thinking” and highlights the hidden thoughtfulness that goes into a design or the solving of a problem. Exhibitors include Peter Harrison from Harrison Design, Trevor Hollard and Rowan Mardghum from Maeker & Amoq, and Jonathan Fundudis and David Holgreaves from Snapp Designs.
