Call for public art

For all those who have taken a wander down the Sea Point Promenade and complained about the pitiful lack of public art, here is your chance. Seeking submissions by 2 September 2013, Art54 is a public art exhibition that will take place along the picturesque Atlantic Seaboard.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from the end of 2013 until mid 2014, forming part of the World Design Capital 2014 celebrations. Work that promotes new and innovative ways of thinking about art in public spaces; considers the unique landscape, mix of people and character; does a lot with limited resources and budget, and add to the public’s experience of the natural beauty and urban vibe of Ward 54 is called for.

Ward 54 is the municipal area of the Cape Town that covers the Atlantic Seaboard. Ward councillor Beverley Schäfer is also Art54’s committee chairperson and says: “The art54 project is [will] contribute to urban regeneration by stimulating interaction between artists, designers, city planners, business owners, residents and developers.” Beverley also sits on the Tourism, Events and Marketing Directorate of the City of Cape Town, and considers this a pilot project that, depending on its success, can be implemented in various locations in the city.

So, whether you’re a performance artist, sculptor, land artist, mural painter, photographer or busker, now is your chance to enter.
